IRAN

Iran, as is well known, is in the process of building its own nuclear weapons capability. It already has the missile delivery systems to mate with those weapons. It may also already have a small number of nuclear weapons smuggled from the Soviet stockpile during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. The big question is Iran’s intentions. Will the Iranian government use nuclear weapons to enhance its position as a regional hegemon, or will it use them in a first-strike attack on Israel—as it has repeatedly stated that it will?

The answer is clear: Iran will use those weapons to attack Israel, even though it knows the result will be the destruction of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The clerical elite that controls Iran considers the country as being more of a process than a state. The desired outcome of that process is conversion of the entire world to Islam. Iran is a Shiite state in which many of the clerical elite believe in the Twelfth Imam, also known as the Hidden Imam and the Mahdi. The Twelfth Imam is a historical figure born in 869 AD who disappeared in 941 AD. His disappearance is referred to as the Occultation. Twelver Shiites believe that the Mahdi will appear, with Jesus Christ as his sidekick, to bring justice to the world. They also contend that they should hasten the return of the Mahdi by creating the proper conditions. This mainly involves slaughtering non-Muslims or forcing them to convert to Islam.

Iran has been conducting low-level warfare against the United States and other Western states since the Islamic revolution in 1979. This warfare has mostly taken the form of state-sponsored terrorism. In fact, Iran hosts an internationalist terrorist confab in Tehran every February. (State-sponsored terrorism should be considered a form of war and treated accordingly.) The head of Iran’s Council of the Guardians of the Constitution, Ayatollah Ahmad Janatti, said on Iranian television in 2007, “Just like this movement destroyed the monarchical regime here, it will definitely destroy the arrogant rule of hegemony of America, Israel, and their allies. At the end of the day, we are an anti-American regime. America is our enemy, and we are the enemies of America. The hostility between us is not a personal matter. It is a matter of principle. We are in disagreement over the very principles that underlie our revolution and our Islam.”1 The United States may not be interested in Iran, but Iran is very much interested in the United States.

On Thermonuclear War, Herman Kahn’s 1960 book on the theory of how to conduct nuclear warfare, is over six hundred pages long.2 Iran’s philosophy on conducting the nuclear war it wishes to have can be summarized in a few sentences spoken by a former president of the republic, Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, in December 2001: “the use of even one nuclear bomb inside Israel would destroy everything. . . . while the Muslim world, if attacked in retaliation, could easily afford to lose millions of martyrs.
